Notable Cases

Represented the wife in a rare contested divorce case that resulted in the Court dismissing the husband’s divorce petition. The husband filed for divorce on the grounds of his wife’s alleged unreasonable behaviour. Nancy Thio argued that her client’s actions should be viewed in the context of the situation, contending that the husband had informed his wife that he was having an extramarital affair, and intended to divorce her and abandon their child, which understandably caused her deep emotional distress and instability. As a result of Nancy’s arguments, the wife succeeded in her defence, and the husband was ordered to pay a specified sum in costs. This unique case was featured in the Straits Times in April 2020, with Nancy’s arguments being quoted. VGT v VGU [2020] SGFC 32

Nancy Thio is a Director at Omnia Law Chambers LLC and a respected legal practitioner with over a decade of legal experience. She has handled a diverse array of legal matters across various fields of law and has a strong interest in family law and employment legal matters.

Her pragmatic approach in handling cases is underpinned by a strong work ethic and an unwavering commitment to her clients. Additionally, her proficiency in English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia helps her communicate effectively with clients from various backgrounds as she guides them through their legal proceedings.

Nancy’s legal career began at two of Singapore’s largest law firms, where she specialised in corporate and commercial law, with a focus on corporate finance, public listings and general corporate matters.

Nancy has also worked as in-house legal counsel to American Express Bank, Tyco International and Shell Singapore. This exposure to operations in large corporations afforded her a broader perspective on complex business transactions, stakeholder goals and standards, impelling her to refine her skills in drafting contracts, negotiations and risk management.

In 2018, Nancy joined a small legal firm and began to shift her focus towards family law and disputes resolution, with a particular emphasis on matrimonial cases, probate matters, and wills and trusts for legacy planning. Nancy recognises the complexities that family dynamics can add to these cases and takes an empathetic and pragmatic approach to help her clients navigate legal principles and procedures towards the best possible outcome.

In 2023, Nancy practised in a mid-sized law firm as an affiliate and in addition to building on her practice in family law and litigation, she started developing her practice in employment law, debt recovery and criminal defence matters.

On criminal defence matters, Nancy has acted for clients in plead-guilty mentions, plea mitigation and trials against the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Nancy also has a deep passion for giving back to the community, generously volunteering her time and legal expertise to various pro bono initiatives. She is the Honorary Secretary and a board member of Wicare Support Group and the Children’s Cancer Foundation, both charities with Institution of Public Character (IPC) status. She also helms the legal clinic at her constituency’s Meet-the-People Sessions at Moulmein Cairnhill.

Nancy enjoys travelling, going on new adventures, spending quality time with her 3 children, playing tennis, and indulging in delicious cuisine. Fun fact: Nancy is allergic to bad food and her language of love is feeding people, especially loved ones. She, together with her mum, runs a home-based business cooking and catering Indonesian food!
